Improve the accessibility of lifts and confined areas
Sometimes the simplest of ideas are the least obvious!
Like this one, from The Accessible Link.
An effective and cost-efficient solution to making existing lifts more accessible is to install a mirror opposite the lift door inside the lift. Same can be said for any confined areas that a wheelchair user might need to back out of.
This practical addition, ideally extending to the floor, makes it much easier to manoeuvre backwards out of the lift. It allows users to exit without turning to see if people are blocking the way and ensures they are moving straight through the door.
Or, of course, if you're at the initial design phase a long-term solution is to request the inclusion of a second door opposite the planned door. The primary reason for this is that it is far easier for wheelchair users to exit a lift moving forward rather than backward.
Check with your venue - do they have double doors or mirrors?
